An article that had been published last Wednesday by a UK media outlet [1] has reopened the doors for that debate and even more criticism directed towards Black Lives Matter.

The looming question of “What is Black Lives Matter really doing?” has been loudly echoed by quite the unexpected source, former Black Panther Party Chairwoman Elaine Brown and hasn’t been sitting too well with many people.

In the opening of the article, Brown reportedly says the following:

“I don’t know what Black Lives Matter does, so I can’t tell you how it compares to what the Black Panther Party was. I know what the BPP was. I know the lives we lost, the struggle we put into place, the efforts we made, the assaults on us by the police and government – I know all that. I don’t know what Black Lives Matter does. So if you can tell me, I’ll give you my thoughts.”

The author of the article which the site lists as its Deputy Editor, Tom Slate proceeds Brown by “adding gasoline to the fire” calling the Black Lives Matter movement a “nebulous hashtag-come-protest movement,” “agitators and beggars,” and even refers to leaders of the movement as “prolific tweeters.”
After Slate’s barrage of insults, the article continues with more comments reportedly made by Brown that include:
“There is no comparison…The next wave of young people running out here, who are complaining and protesting about the murders of young black men and women by the police all over the country, they will protest, but they will not rise up in an organized fashion, with an agenda, to create revolutionary change… We advocated community self-defense organizations to be formed so that we would not be assaulted by the police, so that we would bear arms and assume our human rights.”
Brown then finishes off Slate’s onslaught with her reported statement:
“This to me is a plantation mentality. It smacks of “master if you would just treat me right.” And it has nothing to do with self-determination, empowerment and a sense of justice, or anything else.”

These statements garnered almost immediate retort from various black-catered media outlets, social media users, and fellow activists.

Just two days after Slate’s alleged interview with Brown, prominent activist and BLM figurehead Shaun King [2] sat down with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now to offer a much more nuanced response in comparison to the vehement backlash directed towards Brown on social media where he says:
“When Elaine got involved in the Black Panther Party, it was about two years old. And that’s where we are in the Black Lives Matter movement, as well. And so, I think some of what she did was she evaluated the totality of the Black Panther Party and all that it accomplished in 10 years, and compared it to where we are right now in year two. And so, it’s an unfair comparison to say where we are in year two compared to where the Black Panther Party was in year two.

Two years in, it literally only had 4,000 or 5,000 people, the Black Panther Party, that were committed to it, to its practices. And it was still trying to determine where it went and what it would do. And so, I think if you look at where we are now versus where the Black Panther Party was at this same time, I think we’re doing well…How we do what we do will be uniquely different. Our time is different.

So, I respect her, revere her and admire her, but I was disappointed to read some of what she said.”

In addition to the article, A video posted yesterday by Twitter user @CharMeLoDi that was recorded at the BPP’s 50th Anniversary Conference & Gala held in Oakland, California on the 22nd, shows both Brown and brother of the late Huey Newton elaborating their thoughts on BLM and the article at question. [3]
Brown, starts off very aware of the backlash that the article had received and claims she didn’t know the poster of the article. Despite, she offers a very similar critique. She confident asserts that “Black Lives Matter has no ideology” and other condemning critiques such as referring to the movement as being full of “armchair activists.”

And though many may say that Brown’s critique reeks of elitism and condescension which is fair, her statements still hold truth, a sort of truth which isn’t always soothing.

The truth of the matter is, the Black Panther Party’s aim as stated in their “10 Point Program” was clear. [4] The 10 Point Program was a declaration that many have voted more actionable and efficient.
To gain a better understanding of today’s Black Liberation climate, we must also acknowledge that there is a faction of Black Lives Matter which is an organization and there is also “Black Lives Matter the movement” which Black Americans and other groups within the African Diaspora individually interpret thus making it hard to have the same concise structure and ideological cohesion.
As for now, this is the focal point of the official Black Lives Matter organization according to the official website:[5]

“Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.

It goes beyond the narrow nationalism that can be prevalent within Black communities, which merely call on Black people to love Black, live Black and buy Black, keeping straight cis Black men in the front of the movement while our sisters, queer, and trans and disabled folk take up roles in the background or not at all.

Black Lives Matter affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. It centers those that have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. It is a tactic to (re)build the Black liberation movement.”

With this stated, many have theorized that the Black Lives Matter organization is more geared towards alleviating intercommunal homophobia, stigma, and adversities of Black Queer (LGBT) communities by utilizing racial injustices as a vehicle to make a safer space for a marginalized group within another marginalized group, a stark contrast from BPP’s Ten Point Program.
This aim has also gotten a lot of flack as many suggest it is not an aim for black liberation but LGBT rights intersectionality and that the movement would affect more being “race first.” The late activist Darren Seals used social media to express his thoughts on this [6] and because of it, Black Lives Matter has been eerily silent about his murder.
In the 1960’s, the late Fred Hampton, a chairman within the BPP until his assassination, alluded that both capitalism and economics played a huge role in the tribulations of not only black people but all people subjugated within the system of white supremacy. This ideal was manifested through the Black Panther Party’s various programs not only that fed and clothed but provided communities with employment, housing, education, and healthcare. [7] I myself, know elders who gleefully remember BPP’s golden era and militant yet empowering presence within black communities.
The official Black Lives Matter website states the following in regards to its own manifestations in attempts to counter any misconceptions:

“Many believe the Black Lives Matter movement has no agenda — other than yelling and protesting and disrupting the lives of white people. This is also false. Since the earliest days of the movement in Ferguson, groups like the Organization for Black Struggle, the Black Lives Matter Network, and others have made both clear and public a list of demands.

Those demands include swift and transparent legal investigation of all police shootings of black people; official governmental tracking of the number of citizens killed by police, disaggregated by race; the demilitarization of local police forces; and community accountability mechanisms for rogue police officers. Some proposals like the recently launched Campaign Zero by a group of Ferguson activists call for body cameras on every police officer.

But other groups are more reticent about this solution since it would lead to increased surveillance and possible invasions of privacy, not to mention a massive governmental database of information about communities of color that are already heavily under surveillance by government forces.”
This affirmation is highly questionable for some as many activists are accessible on social media. As well complaints from marginalized yet publicized communities such as Ferguson following tensions from the killing of Mike Brown and others that openly express their overall discontent with BLM.
Some are even claiming that despite their presence within these communities when tensions erupted, they’ve just protested, had accumulated photo and press opportunities while leaving the dirty work to residents with little resources left behind and usually have to rebuild on their own.
Longtime Ferguson, Missouri activist Nyota Uhura conspired in this interview that many hierarchal activists were either paid anarchists or “planted” in Ferguson at the height of it’s notoriety.[8] She also says they’ve held many fundraising initiatives in which little to none was invested in efforts to rebuild Ferguson’s infrastructure after riots had taken place in 2014. Ferguson business owners such as Dellena Jones,[9] who have affected and almost put out of business by various protests and riots have had to result to fundraising efforts of her own with no help from Black Lives Matter as stated in this article.[10]

Another activist and founder of Occupy The Hood, Malik Rhasaan, one time had gone on a brief Twitter rant that blankets the Black Lives Matter movement as orchestrated [11] and also sadly apologizes to black youth for being sold out.[12]

Also and oddly enough, According to this article published by Washington Post shortly after tensions had flared in Ferguson, a hashtag #CutTheCheck had gone viral due to activists demanding pay from an organization that had paid some demonstrators as much as $5,000 per month. [13]
But to be fair, Black Lives Matters despite any uncertainty that surrounds the movement, has in fact empowered many black millennials worldwide to be more involved in their communities and develop a greater awareness of skewed race relations between peoples of the African Diaspora and those who have brutalized, exploited us and seek to make us a permanent underclass.

It’s also undeniable that if Black Lives Matter seeks to make a long lasting impact and be a vehicle for change, they must consider centralizing and adopt a more self-determined philosophy which many doubt will happen.
Debates surrounding the Black Panther Party and Black Lives Matter may never end.

Given the rise and fall of Black Liberation movements before Black Lives Matter, I would insert my thesis that things would go much smoothly if both millennials and our elders embrace the idea of intergenerational equity.

Lastly, though Brown has valid assessments her assuming responsibility to better educate the younger activists and gracefully passing the torch would have been more of the upright thing to do.

City Of Ferguson, MO Is Being Sued By Dept. Of Justice Over Concerns Of Police Corruption https://www.melanoidnation.org/city-of-ferguson-mo-is-being-sued-by-dept-of-justice-over-concerns-of-police-corruption/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/city-of-ferguson-mo-is-being-sued-by-dept-of-justice-over-concerns-of-police-corruption/#comments Sat, 13 Feb 2016 20:28:53 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=3223 The city of Ferguson, MO has been hit with a lawsuit via the Department of Justice.

The lawsuit–which was a civil rights lawsuit–was filed on Wednesday of this week (Feb. 11) upon the St. Louis suburb’s declination to change its law enforcement’s mistreatment of Melanoid people in that area.

An agreement was proposed by the Department of Justice which stated that law enforcement officials would be prevented from doing such things as shooting at moving vehicles, and making arrests without probable cause, among other things.

After a federal investigation was opened on Ferguson, the report revealed corruption on all levels of law enforcement in the city of Ferguson.

Racist Targets Sold At Gun Shows https://www.melanoidnation.org/racist-targets-sold-at-gun-shows/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/racist-targets-sold-at-gun-shows/#comments Wed, 18 Mar 2015 01:00:40 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=1115 Gun shows around the United States are usually meeting grounds for white supremacists. People like George Zimmerman who became a hero to white supremacists for killing an unarmed Black child, has been treated like a celebrity at gun shows around the country.

Recently at a gun show in South Dakota, the tradition of racism has proven to be firmly intact, because a vendor was selling racist gun targets with a stereotypical caricature of a Black male running.

Below is a video from local news coverage of the gun show event, where the white supremacist vendor claims to have sold over 500 copies of the racist targets. He also defended selling the racists gun targets.

Latest Police Report From Ferguson Reveals Disturbing Information https://www.melanoidnation.org/latest-police-report-from-ferguson-reveals-disturbing-information/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/latest-police-report-from-ferguson-reveals-disturbing-information/#comments Thu, 05 Mar 2015 14:12:50 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=910 A 102-page report released from the Justice Department yesterday show highly discriminatory practices on behalf of the police department of Ferguson, Missouri. There are several items from the document that revealed information that racially motivated actions (such as being hit with fines, tickets, and brute force) taken against Melanoid citizens of Ferguson.

One of the items on the report showed an unlawful arrest made which involved a Melanoid man who was allowing his body temperature to cool down after participating in a basketball game on an outdoor public court in the summer of 2012. The arrest resulted in the Melanoid man receiving eight charges, one of the charges implied that he was not wearing a seatbealt, although he had been sitting in the parked car. Because of the charges that he faced, the Melanoid man lost a high profile job that he was employed by for years.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Justice Department will not convict former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson with federal civil rights charges, who senselessly murdered Melanoid teenager Mike Brown in August of 2014. The news from the Justice Department has re-ignited much of the outcry for justice from the Melanoid community of Ferguson that was heard and felt around the globe for much of the second half of 2014. U.S Attorney General Eric Holder stated Wednesday, March 4 that the animosity between the police officers in Ferguson and its Melanoid residents had created a “toxic” environment throughout the city.

Perhaps the most telling  statistic of this story is that between October 2012 and October 2014, Ferguson’s Melanoid community, which constitutes nearly 70 percent of the city’s overall population, were recipients of a disproportionate 85 percent of all traffic checks by the officers of Ferguson and were twice as likely to be searched after being stopped.

Did You Know That Government Documents Exists That Advocate Putting All Black Americans in Concentration Camps? https://www.melanoidnation.org/did-you-know-that-government-documents-exists-that-advocate-putting-all-black-americans-in-concentration-camps/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/did-you-know-that-government-documents-exists-that-advocate-putting-all-black-americans-in-concentration-camps/#comments Tue, 23 Dec 2014 20:53:24 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=689 For years, there have been certain government documents floating around that suggested the mass interment of Black people in America. Documents such as the King Alfred Plan have  long been dismissed by government officials as works of fiction because it cannot be traced back to a specific author or origin.

But recently a new document was discovered.

A thesis written by President Ronald Reagan’s FEMA director Louis Giuffrada at the US Army War College in 1970, entitled “National Survival-Racial Imperative” goes into elaborate details about the logistics of rounding up Black Americans to be placed in concentration camps.

This document did not use code words or euphemisms like many recent comparative documents and policies today. The National Survival-Racial Imperative thesis was very specific about targeting Black Americans.

Here is an excerpt  for the thesis:

“In the past decade, the United States has had an epidemic of confrontations in which outbreaks of bitter racial violence have brought death and destruction and widened the gap between Negro and white. Inevitably, the rising tensions and mutual distrust have led to more violence and disruption.

For purposes of discussion let us assume that racial relations have degenerated to the point where armed militants embark on a massive violent attempt to immobilize the normal routine of a large city. The militants have occupied the city hall, taken over the mayor’s office, and are shooting at police attempting to oust them. An extremely militant Black Nationalist group has seized the main radio stations and has been calling on all sympathizers to arm themselves and “join the people’s revolution.”

As soon as the violence starts, there are similar, though not necessarily preplanned, outbreaks of violence in other cities across the entire nation. The level of violence has quickly exceeded the control capacity of the various state and local agencies. Federal troops have been requested and are already committed. Fierce fighting is taking place in several major cities and intelligence reports indicate the disorder is likely to spread still further. Large numbers of United States troops are still committed overseas and cannot be readily recalled to the United States. To further complicate the problem, white vigilante groups have surfaced and are taking independent counteractions against blacks — without too much attempt to discriminate between militant and nonmilitant…

Faced by mounting death and destruction, as well as increasing demands that he do so, the President reluctantly declares a state of national emergency and puts the entire country on a war basis. The previously murmured suggestion that all Negroes be locked up now swells to a roar. It is like 1941 again, except that now it is the “Black Peril” rather than the “Yellow Peril.”

In the extremely unlikely event that the government were to order the evacuation and detention of all blacks from actual or potential trouble spots, how and by whom would the order be enforced? What are the yardsticks for collecting, evacuating, and interning either militant or pacifistic minority groups; or dissident, potentially disloyal elements; or law-abiding citizens whose only offense is accident of color? Where would the internees be kept? … What would be done with the blacks in the Armed Forces and in civil service and in Congress? The task would be far too large for the Justice Department; it would have to be greatly augmented by military forces, primarily from the United States Army.

The government has historically had the right to protect itself. A government faced with prolonged, simultaneous, apparently coordinated riots disrupting the entire nation to the point where the government feared its very existence was in jeopardy would take many actions which in calmer times would never be considered. “The authority to decide whether the exigency has arisen, belongs exclusively to the President and … his decision is conclusive upon all other persons.” (Martin v. Mott, US Supreme Court 1827).”

Giuffrada’s views could be compared to those of National Security Council staffer Oliver North, who, the Miami Herald reported in 1987, devised a contingency plan for national crises that involved abandoning the constitution. As FEMA administrator, Giuffrida and North collaborated, and the agency supplied the staff for Ronald Reagan’s Emergency Management Preparedness Board, which featured North among its directors.

Oliver North wrote the infamous REX 84 Plan, which was basically patterned after Giuffrada’s Racial Imperative thesis. The Rex 84 Plan and other subsequent documents like it simply replaced the words “Negro” and “Black” with code words like “civilians”,”refugees” (remember how the head’s of FEMA and media outlets were referring to Black people during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina as “refugees”) and now “evacuees”.

The Racial Imperative also described how the media was used to demonize the image and public perception of Japanese-Americans during World War II in order to justify rounding them up to place them in internment camps.

Fast forward to today. Many media outlets are demonizing the public perception of Black Americans around the country, which in turn, is creating a nationwide resentment and justification for so many Black people being murdered in cold blood by white police officers. Almost everyday on news shows we hear propaganda rhetoric such as “Black people are the problem,” “Black thugs”,”what about Black on Black crime”, “Blacks are more violent”,etc, repeated over and over into the collective psyche of the dominant society.

The swift mobilization of police and military forces against African-American protesters and freedom fighters around the country recently, fall right in line with the logistics of the Racial Imperative thesis.

So the question we must ask the dominant white society,is if Black people are the “problem”, the what is the ultimate “solution?”

Did You Know That Witness 40 From The Darren Wilson Grand Jury Is An Extreme White Supremacists? https://www.melanoidnation.org/did-you-know-that-witness-40-from-the-darren-wilson-grand-jury-is-an-extreme-white-supremacists/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/did-you-know-that-witness-40-from-the-darren-wilson-grand-jury-is-an-extreme-white-supremacists/#comments Fri, 12 Dec 2014 06:22:58 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=607 “They need to kill the f*****g niggers. It is like an ape fest.” ~Witness #40 from the Ferguson Grand Jury

Many conservative media outlets are quoting the testimony of a person only known as “witness #40” to justify the murder of unarmed Black teen Mike Brown by white officer Darren Wilson. Witness #40,who we now know is a white woman, was one of the only witnesses who’s story came close to corroborating the testimony of  Darren Wilson.

MSNBC did some closer examinations of the witness testimonies, and they discovered that witness #40 is an extreme white supremacist. Her views about Black people are so racist, the story has to be seen to be believed.

The night of the first Ferguson riots, Witness #40 was posting racist rants online, including: “They need to kill the f****g  niggers. It is like an ape fest.”

She formed an organization to raise money for Darren Wilson and to get schools to send him Christmas cards.

For more proof of her racist rants, watch the video below:

The “Giant Negro” Hysteria Has Made A Comeback https://www.melanoidnation.org/the-giant-negro-hysteria-has-made-a-comeback/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/the-giant-negro-hysteria-has-made-a-comeback/#comments Thu, 04 Dec 2014 08:29:29 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=507 In 1897 the Kansas City Journal ran an article on the son of a former slave named John Rogan, who was referred to at the time as the Negro Giant. Rogan reached the  height 8ft 6 inches, and is acknowledged as one of the tallest men ever recorded. Rogan made a living selling photos and postcards of himself, and several newspapers wrote articles about him during his lifetime.

There is evidence to believe that some media outlets at the time decided to capitalize on this image of a “Giant Negro”, because starting in 1897 the New York Times began  to run a series of racist, anti-Black propaganda stories designed to scare the white public.

From the 1890’s to the 1940’s, newspapers from around the country ran sensationalized stories about “Giant Negroes”. These were exaggerated stories about black criminality that played on white supremacist stereotypes.

The underlying theme of the stories were that black people were somewhat non-human and they were in need of more excessive violence from law-enforcement in order to be subdued. Here are some of the actual newspaper clippings from the early part of the 20th century covering the “Giant Negro” hysteria:

Fast forward to today. In cases like the legalized killing of Mike Brown and Eric Garner by law enforcement, people have tried to justify their murders by constantly mentioning the size of these individuals. In the case of Mike Brown, officer Darren Wilson-who was relatively the same size as Mike Brown-emphasized in his police statement that he felt  “like a five year old holding onto Hulk Hogan” when he engaged in his confrontation with Brown.

In the case of Eric Garner, people have tried to justify  his murder, and lack of indictment of the police officers who committed the murder, on Garner’s massive size.

So we have to fully accept that we live in a system of white supremacy that is still judging Melanoid people as a whole based of the same dangerous stereotypes from over 100 years ago. Trying to convince the dominant society to remove these deep rooted stereotypes have been, and will continue to be futile. Instead,Melanoid people should put themselves in a position of empowerment to protect themselves from the dangers of those stereotypes.

If America Is A Civilized Nation,Why Are People Rewarded Money For Killing Black Citizens? https://www.melanoidnation.org/if-america-is-a-civilized-nationwhy-are-people-rewarded-money-for-killing-black-citizens/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/if-america-is-a-civilized-nationwhy-are-people-rewarded-money-for-killing-black-citizens/#comments Fri, 28 Nov 2014 01:28:27 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=385 In  wake of the protests from the recent events in Ferguson, the shame and embarrassment of systematic white supremacy is on center stage for the world to see. As usual, the dialog has become deflective and evasive of the real problem. In media outlets, people are discussing the problem with the “looters” in Ferguson. People are discussing “bad cops”. And people are regurgitating the same tired disingenuous and deflective “what about Black on black crime” talking point.

All of these narratives are red herrings to divert the public from the real issue: Systematic white supremacy. The only dialog that Black people-and the nation for that matter- should be discussing is how are we going to replace the system of white supremacy with justice. And Melanoid people should be asking,  how are we going to protect ourselves to minimize the adverse effects of white supremacy if this system is to remain?

With all of the recent events where unarmed Black  people have been legally murdered by suspected white supremacists all throughout the United States, no one is really discussing one particular factor:

Many of the killers who are  murdering Black people are being rewarded cash money from other white supremacists nationwide.

In Florida when Michael  Dunn murdered Black teen Jordan Davis, there we donations sent to him by supporters online.

Also in Florida, when George Zimmerman murdered Black teen Trayvon Martin, not only was Zimmerman rewarded with donations that many people estimate exceeded the million dollar mark, Zimmerman is treated like a hero and celebrity around white supremacist circles. Promoters were even trying to put together a “celebrity” boxing match for Zimmerman at one point.

Even in cases where  is not murder involved, suspected white supremacists are still rewarded for harming Black people. Police officer Daniel Holtzclaw, the Oklahoma City police officer arrested in August and charged with sexually abusing eight Black women, has supporters online who have raised thousands of dollars for him.

In the recent case where Darren Wilson was given the legal right to murder unarmed Black teen Mike Brown, he has received hundreds of thousands of dollars (some estimate over a million at this point) in donations from white supremacists  supporters around the country.

While some have tried to deny the underlying racism and anti-Black hatred that is driving the support for Darren wilson, the truth always finds a way to reveal itself at some point. The GoFundMe page that was initially taking in donations for Darren Wilson (which has since been taken down) had a  section on the page where people who donated could post their comments.

And the people who were donating the money to Wilson were very clear and very specific about why they were donating. The overall consensus was that the supporters were donating because they were glad that Darren Wilson murdered a Black person.

The comments and support from the Darren Wilson GoFundMe page became so blatantly racists, the site administrators had to take the comment section down. Before they removed the comments, there were some screen shots saved and circulated around the net.

“I thank all Police. You are the “Thin Blue Line” protecting normal Americans from aggressive and entitled primitive savages” -Brad Moody $100

“I support officer Wilson and he did a great job removing an unnecessary thing from the public” -David Durant $50

“Darren and those like him are all that stand between Americans and anarchy. After 60 years of supporting the blacks I give up” -Richard Holsinger $100

“All self-respecting whites have a moral responsibility to support our growing number of martyrs to the failed experiment called diversity” -Mike Berman $100

Comments like these clearly show the support for Darren Wilson was not about justice: it was about white supremacist domination and ethnic cleansing.

With this type of mindset among us in the United States,we must understand that Melanoid people around the nation are in a state of emergency . We are literally being legally  targeted and hunted in America based on race.

And the people who are acting as “martyrs” for white supremacy are being rewarded.  In cash. That gives every white supremacist in the country the incentive to come after any one of us next.

We are not post-racial.

Headlines are coming in from news sources around the world that give commentary on the situations surrounding Ferguson.

The international press is pointing out the hypocrisy of the U.S  when it comes to race relations, and many commentators have taken the opportunity to question America’s credentials as a human rights leader.

China
The death of Michael Brown, whose killing sparked the unrest, is “a stark reminder for Uncle Sam that there are a lot of human rights violations on its own soil,” says China’s official news agency Xinhua.

“It should first fix its own problems before criticizing other countries.”

Xinhua adds that few other countries are “as self-righteous and complacent as the United States when it comes to human rights issues, but the Ferguson tragedy is apparently a slap in the face”.

Iran
Iran’s Press TV dedicated all of its morning programmes to the Ferguson clashes, showing what appeared to be “live” video from the protests.

Press TV reported that attorneys for Mr Brown’s family had said that the “grand jury process was rigged to clear the white officer” who shot him.

Iran’s State TV said the grand jury decision “indicates the existence of racial discrimination in the USA”.

The protests in Ferguson are also one of the top stories in the Iranian press.

The conservative newspaper Kayhan carried a collage of pictures from Ferguson, including a US flag being set on fire. Its headline said: “A rebellion in 90 American cities as a result of the non-indictment of the murderer policeman.”

Javan, another hardline daily, carried a report headlined, “Non-indictment of a white policeman; anger engulfs 90 American cities”.

Egypt

Al-Wafd sums up the widely-expressed view in the headline “An uprising against racism in the USA”.

Qatar

Al-Watan says US cities have been denouncing “lethal racism”, and Syria’s official Al-Thawrah newspaper notes that protests against police violence and racism are on the increase.

On social media, some Arabic-language posts have been mocking the US government and even gloating over its mishandling of the case. The Twitter hashtag #USAprotests in Arabic has been used more than 4,000 times since Tuesday.

Russia
The #Ferguson hashtag is also among the top 10 Twitter trends in Russia, and press articles have drawn parallels between Ferguson and the Maidan protests in Ukraine.

Ren TV plays on the racial aspect of the Ferguson protests and also brings in the Ukrainian crisis, describing the demonstrations as a “colour revolution” and “an attempt to start a civil war in the US”.

Germany

The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung argued that the underlying reasons for the violence in Ferguson are deep in American society. “The fact that racism exists in America is indisputable — but this racism is not only directed in one direction”,the paper wrote.

“Potentially the Grand Jury has indeed examined all evidence comprehensively and impartially. But the fact that so many people between New York and Los Angeles are convinced that justice has not been administered is another tragedy,” the paper wrote. “Gestures of respect and reconciliation will be indispensable to bridge the gap between the police and America’s black population. But even that will not be enough.”

Frankfurter Rundschau, made a similar argument: “The Grand Jury’s decision has not surprised anyone — which explains the full cynicism of this system.” The newspaper blamed the grand jury for having looked at the evidence with a white worldview. “Secret hearings do by far not meet serious interpretations of the rule of law.”

France

Liberation newspaper says: “Ferguson is a long way from being the post-racial America dreamed of by Barack Obama.” “A predominantly white jury chooses not to pursue another white, accused of murdering a black in a predominantly black city,” the newspaper wrote, concluding that Ferguson raises yet again the question of racism and police brutality in the United States.

Spain

Pere Vilanova writes in El Periodico that “perhaps the symbolic value of the election of a black man as president in 2008 has been overestimated and inter-communal wounds will never be healed”.

Italy

La Stampa’s New York correspondent Paolo Mastrolilli says the discussion has become one about the race problem “connected to inequality and economic disparity”. He notes that some of the white demonstrators in New York and Los Angeles wanted to broaden the debate in that direction.

India

In India a reporter for NDTV, the cable news channel, said that “the case epitomized race crimes in America” and that the photos of protesters evoking the images from Tiananmen Square were a “symbol of the challenge the greatest nation on Earth faces today.”

N. Korea

The North Korean government issued a  statement following the Ferguson verdict: ” US is kingpin of human rights abuses”.

South Africa
Writing in South Africa’s Daily Maverick, Richard Poplak finds that images of officers facing off against enraged citizens show “an American city aping South African archival footage”.

“It’s a reminder that in divided countries, with histories of institutionalized racism, reconciliation without actually reconciling… justice is not just impossible, but a massive cover-up, a ruse used by power.”
