I am caucasian and have lived in Napa for 10 years too long. Many (not all) people in Napa are willfully ignorant. I have witnessed this racism and have felt it during routine shopping errands. It is one aspect that is causing me to seek housing in another area.
On the flip side…the wine train was sold to a company who seems? … to be standing up to some of this. However, bigotry and willful ignorance among property owners is rampant.
Business will not relocate to this area, because the bigoted labor pool is pervasive. Company employees will quit. They will not put up with the backward hateful behavior n Napa. Then, folks wonder why Napa remains a one industry town…well?
Napa needs a few black owned business…such as a property management company…to move into the area and actively market and rent to all people of color.
The added matter is the there are people of varying races who support the bigotry…because …well, not sure why and that is bad also.

I am caucasian. From the onset of my residency I have witnessed racism – both overt and more covert forms. Many of the people engaged in this activity are Napa residents who were born in Napa. There are attitudinal barriers expressed against all races and it is hateful. There continues to be a percentage of the population who will not permit living and work opportunities for people who are not white. Napa seems fine with housing and hiring people with little or no education, people who are not interested in reading more than the local newspaper and those who are willfully ignorant. By this I mean…these folks do not want to know about people different than they are.

The author is absolutely right.

Napa residents complain about the area as a one industry town (wine) and cannot comprehend why larger diverse business will not locate in Napa. Well, because their employees will leave the company as the blatant bigotry is so pervasive that the general population cannot get out of their own line of fire — so to speak.

Additionally, there are folks of various races living in Napa who perpetuate the bigotry and this action supports the status quo.

Unfortunately people do not remain here, because the hate is palpable.
