After the white extremist group  saw their requests to adopt-a-mile close to the North Carolina border rejected by the Georgia Department of Transportation, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) came to the aid of the Klan by challenging the rejection.

Maya Dillard Smith, Executive Director of Georgia’s ACLU branch, released the following statement:

Accessing the Georgia courts to defend ones constitutional rights is fundamental to protect those very rights. But the state of Georgia believes Georgians only have the right to exercise defense of their most fundamental rights, only if the state says so. It’s that kind of unchecked power that erodes individual liberty guaranteed to each Georgian by the U.S. and Georgia state Constitution.

Although the Klan technically does have the right to “adopt-a-mile”, perhaps the most interesting issue about this story is the ACLU’s willingness to assist the hate group in having their requests granted by the state. The mile that the KKK looks to adopt is located on Route 515 near the border of North Carolina.

If this appeal is granted to the Klan, this would send a vivid and threatening statement to Melanoid people who are living, working, and/or traveling around or through this stretch of highway.

Matt Kenny, a white police officer in Wisconsin’s capitol city of Madison, killed the teenage Robinson back in March after shooting the Melanoid teen in the stairwell of his apartment. Police Chief Mike Koval spoke with the press on Wednesday, stating that they found that Kenny followed ‘proper procedure’ after his encounter with Robinson on that fateful March day.

Koval further elaborated on the matter, saying that “Matt has withstood scrutiny and is entitled to pursue his passion and his passion is to be a police officer serving the Madison community,” said Koval. “I am not going to strong-arm someone to resign, retire or relocate, particularly when there has been no fault found. He is his own master of his own universe.”

In spite of Madison Police Department’s reassurance that its officer’s actions were justified, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) delivered a countering statement: “Too many killings have taken place, whether or not police officers violated the law or departmental policy,” said Chris Ahmuty, the Executive Director of the ACLU of Wisconsin. “Either the Madison Police Department’s policies or its internal investigations are deficient. The recurring violence carried out by the Madison Police Department will continue, unless the Madison Police Department finds better ways to handle critical incidents.”
