The incident occurred during the fall semester of 2013 when Williams was forced down by Logan Beaschler, Joseph “Brett” Bomgardner, and Colin Warren, and fastening a u-shaped bicycle lock around his neck, as if to simulate them capturing Williams as a slave.

During the abusive confrontation, Williams’s abusers called him “nigger”, and also ridiculed him by nicknaming him “fraction”–in reference to the old three-fifths law which recognizes Black people in this country as partially human.

The representatives of the white men implied that their clients were engaged in an excessive “prank war”, because they were “immature, insensitive, and stupid.”

Although the defendants were found guilty for misdemeanor assault on Monday of this week, they were not found guilty on more severe charges of hate crimes. The 12-person jury on hand for the two-plus week trial were comprised of six men and six women–none of who were Black.

White Supremacy? There’s An App For That. https://www.melanoidnation.org/white-supremacy-theres-an-app-for-that/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/white-supremacy-theres-an-app-for-that/#comments Fri, 09 Oct 2015 18:05:18 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=2658 OAKLAND, CA — This Bay Area city in California was once known for being a proud hub of Black culture, as it was also had a reputation of being one of the United States’ “Chocolate Cities”.

Today, it seems that Oakland–in conjunction with the natural effects that time causes–has changed drastically.

As suspected white supremacists continue to move into the area, many of them have resorted to being part of an online community, ran by nextdoor.com. The website, which was developed in nearby San Francisco in 2010, has seen a sharp uptick in usage of the web platform. 176 neighborhoods (and 20 percent of all households in the city) in Oakland have groups registered on Nextdoor. The site, which is known as “the private social network for neighborhoods”, allows people to report “suspicious activity.”

Of course, much of the reporting on Nextdoor involves reporting innocent Black people as being suspects for merely engaging in non-criminal/pedestrian activity, such as walking down the street. Many of the area’s Black door-to-door sales reps and mailmen have been labeled as “suspects”, according to the online company.

White members of Nextdoor have used the site to call the police and file complaints about Black residents nearby, which includes being “too noisy” at public parks and bars. Mitsu Fisher, a Black father of two, isn’t allowing his kids to play outside or roam the neighborhood free without his presence. The concern stems from a February 2014 incident in which a patrol officer working for a private security company chased down and shot a young Black teenage boy. To make matters worse, the private security company that  the race soldier worked for forbids their officers from carrying firearms. As a result of shooting the Black teen, the officer was rewarded by white members of Nextdoor.com and local neighborhood groups on Yahoo, with all of them collaborating to buy him a gift.

One Black Oakland native by the name of Leland Thompson has grown so weary of the rampant racism in theses local Internet groups that he has decided to stop wearing hoodies. After regularly browsing “Glenfriends”, a Yahoo group created by the Glenview (in Oakland) neighborhood residents, he has discovered that an overwhelming amount of the “suspicious activity” reports in the group described him. “Black man, five-ten, 160 pounds, bald,” Mr. Thompson says in reference to the typical descriptions given in the “Glenfriends” Yahoo group.

One-Legged Homeless Black Man Brutalized By San Francisco Police https://www.melanoidnation.org/one-legged-homeless-black-man-brutalized-by-san-francisco-police/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/one-legged-homeless-black-man-brutalized-by-san-francisco-police/#comments Mon, 28 Sep 2015 19:57:49 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=2584 It took 14 San Francisco Police Department officers to take down and restrain a one-legged, Black homeless man, who was “armed” with crutches and apparently “dangerous”. The incident is the latest embarrassment for the US police, who face constant accusations of illogical brutal use of force.

The confrontation was captured on video and shows white police officers taking down a one-legged homeless black man on the city’s central Market St. According to witnesses, police were called in to the scene to take care of a suspicious man waving some “sticks” around in the middle of the street.

The video was shot in August by Chaedria Labouvier, who is heard calling out to police throughout the video, shows the extent of humiliation and brute force exercised immediately after the man was wrestled to the ground by SFPD officers. As the disabled- and believed to be mentally challenged  Black male struggles to move, 4 cops pin him down,  after  officers called for an Extended Range Impact Weapon (ERIW) which is a less lethal use of force due to the circumstances.

“These are my crutches. I use these to walk,” the man tried to explain. But even after realizing that the man had a prosthetic leg, the police officers continued to use overwhelming physical restrain and man-handled him, forcing his head to the ground.

In the video you can clearly hear the homeless man complying with the cops and asking them to get off his prosthetic leg while hand-cuffed, as well as a Woman saying “Oh my God –you´re on his prosthetic leg?”
The video shows that the officers used their body weight to subdue the subject by attempting to hold him still for no reason-since the man was restrained.

San Francisco police spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan said officers encountered the 42-year-old man waving around wooden sticks and detained him for a mental health evaluation as he walked toward street traffic.

Witnesses in the video can be heard saying the man used the sticks as his crutches and was simply crossing the street.
Police chief Greg Suhr and others would “look into this situation thoroughly and determine if there were any violations of department policy”. She said the case was also sent to the independent office of citizen complaints.

This incident comes after a recent incident where San Francisco’s chief of police has moved to dismiss eight officers who sent and received racially charged and homophobic text messages that included references to lynching’s, white power and burning crosses.
Here’s the video of the incident below.

Classic Man: Tristan Walker Contributes To Black Society In A Major Way https://www.melanoidnation.org/classic-man-tristan-walker-contributes-to-black-society-in-a-major-way/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/classic-man-tristan-walker-contributes-to-black-society-in-a-major-way/#comments Wed, 05 Aug 2015 20:58:28 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=2264 At our best, Melanoid men create the gold standard for “cool”. Whether this “cool” involves being the best-dressed at an event, the world’s most admired statesman, or the King of an entire genre of music, it is no secret that we exude a regal air that the world covets–and in many cases–seeks to emulate. One young Melanoid man in California’s Bay Area is yet another soldier in the long line of the royalty that is the Black man.

Tristan Walker is the visionary behind the creation of Bevela collection of shaving and grooming products with Melanoid men in mind. Because so many Melanated men suffer from Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, aka “razor bumps”, our skin requires special care that will maintain healthy skin after shaving. Mr. Walker has filled a large void by creating these products.

As a long-time entrepreneur in the Bay Area’s Silicon Valley, Walker got his start in the area by working as an intern for social media giant Twitter. In an interview with the San Francisco Business Times, he explains,  “I want Walker & Co. (Walker’s company which created Bevel) to be the last thing I do. I want it to outlast me. I want to create a brand that lives on and that people really trust.”

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Walker’s accomplishment with his mission is that he has been able to do so from Silicon Valley, an industrial sector of the U.S. that has traditionally lacked a substantial Melanoid presence. His accomplishments don’t stop at Bevel alone. Walker has launched a non-profit by the name of Code 2040which seeks to steer more Melanated young professionals into the tech industry.

By creating Bevel, Mr. Walker has given Melanated men a healthy alternative to the traditional selection of shaving products that often fall short on their advertised objectives of clean shaves with no skin damage. This in itself, is “cool”.

To purchase Bevel products, go to getbevel.com .
