Farryn Johnson, a 26-year-old ex-waitress of a Baltimore Hooters, was awarded $250,000 by a Maryland arbitrator when it was determined that a restaurant implemented a “vague and subjective” hair policy that conjured up racist overtones. The hair policy required the management to enforce policies that determine what employee’s hair color is right for them based on their racial background.

Johnson, whose hair was highlighted with blond streaks, was told that “Black people don’t have blond hair”, and was terminated for her hairstyle. After starting work for Hooters on September of 2012, Ms. Johnson was fired on August 12 of the following year. The date of her termination occurred six weeks after being told by Hooters management on June 30, 2013 that she had six weeks to change her hairstyle. She was awarded the $250,000 after an April 2, 2015 judgment after filing a complaint with the EEOC back in 2013.
