Maine governor Paul LePage spoke at a town hall assembly on Wednesday, and had the following to say about his state’s drug problem:

The traffickers—these aren’t people that take drugs. These are guys with the names D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty—these types of guys—that come from Connecticut and New York; they come up here, they sell their heroin, then they go back home. Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young, white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue that we’ve got to deal with down the road.

As expected, members of his staff have stepped forward to deny any accounts of racism from the Republican governor. Michael Sheppard, who is a reporter for the Bangor Daily News, delivered the following Tweet in regards to the LePage’s statement(s):
