The white person who you have considered a true friend for the past 20 years may feel differently toward you.
A recent story released by the Washington Post reveals alarming information showing that the average American white person has only one Black friend in stark contrast to the Black American having eight white friends, assuming they both have a personal connection of 100 friends/acquaintances each.
Another publication, The Huffington Post, released a similar article showing studies extracted from the Public Religion Research Institute that 91 percent of the average white American’s closest family and friends are white and 1 percent are Black, in comparison with Blacks who claim 83 percent of their closest friends are Black, 8 percent of them claiming whites as their best friends, 2 percent Latino/Hispanic, and 3 percent of Blacks claim that people of mixed-race ethnicity are their closest friends.
In light of the recent theory that today’s society is “post-racial”, numbers such as these are a sobering reminder that many in the dominant society may still have reservations about forming long-term and meaningful friendships with Blacks. Perhaps this is indicative of the long-time belief that whites have no interest in cashing in on their white privilege.
