The ex-officer, Peter Liang, was convicted of manslaughter in February in the shooting of Akai Gurley. Gurley had been walking down to the lobby when Liang was patrolling the inside of the building. Liang opened a door to the stairwell and fired his weapon once accidentally. The bullet ricocheted and struck Gurley. Liang then chose to contact his union boss instead of giving the dying Black man the medical attention he needed.

Liang’s attorneys questioned a juror in court Wednesday afternoon over his alleged Facebook shares that were critical of police and about accusations he was untruthful during jury selection when he said no one in his close family had ever been accused of a crime.

Juror 9, 62-year-old Michael Vargas, took the witness stand before Justice Danny Chun in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn a week after Liang’s attorneys, Paul Shechtman and Gabriel J. Chin, filed a motion asking for a new trial based on the allegations. Liang’s attorneys wrapped up their questioning of Vargas late Wednesday afternoon, and prosecutors are expected to cross examine him tomorrow.

Liang’s sentencing, originally scheduled for Thursday, April 14, was postponed until and is expected to take place on Tuesday, April 19.

NYPD Officers Now Required to Issue Receipts During Stop-And-Frisk Attempts https://www.melanoidnation.org/nypd-officers-now-required-to-issue-receipts-during-stop-and-frisk-attempts/ https://www.melanoidnation.org/nypd-officers-now-required-to-issue-receipts-during-stop-and-frisk-attempts/#comments Mon, 28 Sep 2015 17:33:05 +0000 http://melanoidnation.org/?p=2579 For the entirety of its existence, the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy has been deemed highly questionable and controversial in the way that it targets Melanoid people in New York City.  According to the New York Civil Liberties Unionthe first half of 2015 saw New Yorkers getting stopped by the police 13,604 times, with 11,124 of them being totally innocent. 7,158 of the people stopped were Black.

In what appears to be an attempt to curb such a heavy trend in NYC, police are now required to give a slip with a title that reads “What Is A Stop?” to the people they stop for questioning. As of Sept. 21st, NYPD cops will no longer be able to stop-and-frisk a person because they “look nervous or suspicious”. Stop-and-frisk is an ongoing problem that has even caused long-term trauma among Melanoid people who were targeted by this policy. Watch the following video to see the report about the debilitating affects of stop-and-frisk on Black Society.

A story published on Capital New York reported that as many as 85 IP addresses were connected to 1 Police Plaza, the headquarters of the New York City Police Department. The connected IP addresses twisted content that described some of the most heinous and high-profile cases of police brutality, including Black victims Eric Garner, Sean Bell, and Amadou Diallo.

More changes were made to the wikipedia entries as a means of covering NYPD corruption, such as stop-and-frisk, and the top officials of the NYPD.

One of the edits were altered from “Garner raised both his arms in the air” to “Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke.” Another edit read “push Garner’s face into the sidewalk” into “push Garner’s head down into the sidewalk.” Capital New York  also revealed that the word “chokehold” was replaced two times to “chokehold or headlock” and into “respiratory distress.”
