This family of Melanoid people moved to Lindenhurst, New York in 2013. Lindenhurst is the state’s 4th largest village with over 28,000 residents. The small town also happens to be located on the southern shore of Long Island (NY). Lindenhurst, which has an 84% white population, saw the Copes make the town their home, and its white residents aren’t too thrilled.

The family received a letter in their mailbox postmarked May 19th, which reads:

Attn: African-American family. This is coming from the Lindenhurst community. Lindenhurst is 84% white population. You don’t belong here. Please leave Lindenhurst as soon as you can. It will be better for all of us. Find a town where there are more people like you. Sorry if this is rude, but it’s the truth.

Ms. Ronica Copes, who opened the computer-printed anonymous note on the 21st, openly expressed her disgust and concern for the letter that she and her family received. She stated that her family is now more observant of the people in Lindenhurst, because anyone could have sent them the letter.
