Sundown Towns were locations throughout the United States where the unwritten (and sometimes written) rule was, Black people must be out of the area after 6 o’clock, or “sundown”. Most of these Sundown Towns were prevalent during the Jim Crow era. And many places in America still have sundown rules for Black Americans today.
This week, a group of about 90 adults and teens from Flint Michigan were wrapping up a college tour. On their way back to Flint, their bus had mechanical issues. They ended up spending the night at the Econo Lodge in Live Oak, Florida.
Coordinator Blake Odum says right after dinner, is when the trip took a much different and disturbing tone.
“It was owned by white people. And they started taking pictures of all the kids as we were walking in and out of the hotel,” said student Melissa Blacque.
“I heard one of the ladies, she said, ‘If I see one more of them, I’m calling the law,'” Odum said.
Blacque says the students were peaceful, but felt uncomfortable at the hotel.
“They were calling us the N word and called Blake the N word. We were just like ‘whoa,'” Blacque said.
Odum says things felt so tense that to avoid any trouble, he tried to be proactive by calling police. When police arrived, they told the group to stay in their rooms for the night. Odum says the officer left him with a chilling message.
“The officer pulled me to the side and said, ‘You know, I just want to let you know this area right off the interstate, people aren’t too accommodating to you all.’ And he said, ‘If you know what I mean.’ I said, ‘Black people?’ And he said, ‘Yeah,'” Odum said.
The students claimed that overnight, the staff antagonized them. The group says they were told to check out the next morning immediately at 10.
As they left, that’s when Odum says tensions reached a boiling point, when he says he heard the manager say, “‘We’re going to get these N****rs off our property.’ And I was blown back by that,” Odum said.

I am disappointed that they stayed at the Econo Lodge. What does it take for some black people to stop doing business with white supremacist? They called them Niggers, they said they weren’t welcome and they still gave them their money to stay there. This is unbelievable to me what black people will put up with from white supremacist yet boycott a black establishment forever if they are slightly inconvenienced by them. Black people like this will always have money for white supremacist institutions no matter how they are treated because deep down they want to be “integrated” and that is why they are so shocked and will take the abuse from white supremacist. I guarantee if you asked them or their families about donating to Melanoidnation.org, FDMG Academy, theharvestinstitute.org , or any black organization that looks out for black people first they will decline.
They didn’t pay for it…. The bus company paid for them to stay because the bus broke down… The bus company wouldn’t relocate them because of economical reasons…. The students weren’t left with any options!

Unfortunately, our young black people were taught first hand what hatred for the color of skin feels like. I think what they did was very brave. I praise the young adults for maintaining their cool. I disagree with staying on the bus, it would have only pleased the Econo Lodge. In order to enact change we must endure suffering. If we, African Americans, had never had sit ins would we have been served at the front counter, if we had not sued to change separate but equal, would things had changed, if we had not march or boycott would things have changed. We have to take a stand to enact change. It infuriated the staff at the Econo Lodge to open up their white hotel and serve Black People, but they did it….
Telling African Americans not to stay there is what they want. They don’t want us there. What we should do is have a peaceful/nonviolent group stay there every weekend. That is what would hurt them… I agree contact the corporate office and file a lawsuit. That’s my two cent…..
