A deputy said he was forced to shoot 28-year-old Cedric Bartee inside an alleged stolen vehicle at an apartment complex in southwest Orange County just after midnight Monday.
But witnesses said they saw Bartee, who is black, with his hands up as the three shots were fired by the deputy, who is white.
Orange County Police held a press conference where they strategically made African American Sheriff Jerry Demings the spokesperson to “ask for patience” as authorities investigate the shooting.Bartee was in critical but stable condition Monday evening, Demings said.
“His hands went down after the first shot,” said Natasha Hall, a resident at Timber Sound Apartments east of MetroWest.
Hours after the shooting, Demings said detectives were aware of the differing accounts and asked that the public trust the investigative process to find the truth.
