Floyd Mayweather, And The Mainstream Media’s Fake Outrage Against Him

During the lead up to and in the aftermath of the May 2 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, much discussion had been made about Mayweather’s history of domestic violence. Some (ESPN’s Keith Olbermann) even called for a boycott of the fight.

However, nothing was mentioned of Jim Lampley’s domestic violence history. Jim Lampley served as the chief broadcaster calling the fight and has served as a central figure in HBO’s boxing coverage.

Olbermann and a slew of other reporters were capable of going back to 2001 through court documents to find out about Mayweather, but they couldn’t perform a simple Google search to highlight Lampley’s abuse? Lampley’s then girlfriend said he abused her in front of his 14-year-old son in addition to violating a restraining order she had against him. Why was there no mention or outrage about that? Why didn’t Olbermann call for a boycott of Lampley?

The premise many of these moral grandstanding reporters and fans presented to the public was that if you buy the fight you somehow support domestic violence. That is utterly ridiculous. If that’s the case, then by watching or buying Pacquiao fights over the years you somehow supported adultery, cheating on your taxes in two countries, and you opposed gay marriage.

Not to mention Pacquiao admitted that his dad ate his dog. I mean, not even Mike Vick would do that. But did PETA protest this fight? No. People were mad at Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Minnesota Twins outfielder Torii Hunter for even mentioning Mayweather in tweets.

Boxing is a form of entertainment. It is a sport that people enjoy for athleticism, skill, and performance. We don’t’ need to take a moral position at the movies, so why do we need to take one while watching a sport?

Also, these reporters didn’t call for a protest of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the NFL. Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of some form of sexual assault or harassment on three different occasions, yet everyone is eager to cover his sport and games. Nor did anyone protest goalie Hope Solo and the U.S. women’s soccer team. Solo assaulted her sister and nephew, (who was a minor) and she wasn’t even suspended. Anyone smell a double standard?

Furthermore, ESPN’s own Mike Tirico has been disciplined by the network for sexually harassing multiple women on multiple occasions during the 90s. Olbermann sure doesn’t have any problem taking that ESPN check. Perhaps he should boycott his own network because he’s clearly so concerned with the welfare of women everywhere. Oh and ESPN host Michelle Beadle should get in on the action.

Mayweather is the only one of the aforementioned that has served time for abuse and misconduct toward women. So what is the underlying issue with Mayweather and not the others on the list that have violated women? I’ll tell you what the underlying issue is: Mayweather makes them feel inferior. He makes them feel inferior financially and athletically. To top it off, he is an audacious, unapologetic black man that is a living example of the American dream. Just look at Twitter after the fight concluded. Many people were using the N-word to describe Mayweather just for winning a boxing match.

These reporters and many fans are astonishingly hypocritical and only try to limit his income because they believe the American dream was meant for them and those like them, not a black man from humble beginnings. That the root of the dislike for Mayweather. So all those outraged over Mayweather’s abuse, I urge you to be just as outraged over Lampley’s if you’re not a hypocrite.

And to those moral purists who say Mayweather’s abuse or allegations are worse, Pacquiao would certainly agree that all sins are equal under God.

The storm of hatred on the internet directed at Mayweather after the fight was over was a much bigger story than the rehashing of some old crimes that he already did time for. All of this thinly veiled racism against him is a joke, and they aren’t fooling anyone.

    1. dj says:

To be honest I am more disappointed with a lot of black folks, including close friends of mine because they was right along with everyone else, jumping on the Mayweather bashing bandwagon. They kept saying he is so arrogant and I wish he lose! I can’t stand him! Black people are so indoctrinated into engineering their own doom that it is extremely troubling and toxic.

I doubt, no I challenge anyone to find me a Filipino who was hoping Pacquiao will lose. Guess what, you won’t find any but if you go to Facebook you will see a whole slew of Memes getting at Mayweather. Oh, and social media (twitter) undoubtedly proved once and for all that racism against black folks (on a global level) is alive and well in “post-racial” 2015.

TBA and Professor Truth talked about the whole Mayweather thing, cooning black minions, and white supremacy on the TBA show… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea5RZJJyAds It was pretty good.

Black people, we have no friends who don’t look like us. We are all we’ve got. The sooner we get used to it the better we will be prepared as a whole to combat the Everybody vs. Black People war.

      1. Da Sink says:

I had to correct this dude just yesterday morning about how he was going on and on about Mayweather not being this, and beating his wife that. I knew about Pac’s adultery and the fact he doesn’t think the poor of the Philippines should have access to affordable contraceptives, so I blasted him. Of course, the dude was Black. Really, all of this is putting Floyd in the same poison position as Jack Johnson: he’s become the man you’ll pay to see lose.

      2. Ezra Taylor says:

        DJ:
As you stated earlier we have black that aren’t our friends either.

ESPN needs to stop their anger towards Mayweather. He courageously fought hard in his fight May 2. He used his boxing skills well. It does not sit well with us when Mayweather is attack mercilessly. Mayweather has accomplished much more than Keith Olbermann. Mayweather is the baldest fighter in the world who has a unique fighting style. Mayweather fought a smart tactical fight that helped him win. After Mayweather won the fight, he showed nothing but class and dignity that made me proud.
Employee of ESPN report only negative, biased nonessential facts about Mayweather past. These reporters who complain about Mayweather the most are the biggest hypocrites. If they continue to be hypocritical of Mayweather, everyone will not take them seriously. We demand that Mayweather is treated with respect and dignity that he deserves.

      5. John says:

So if you don’t like Mayweather you are a self hating black man? It’s great if the Filipinos want to blindly follow and love a homophobe like Pacquiao just because they’re from the same place. I however will not blindly support an abusive piece of shit like Mayweather just because I’m black. And there were plenty of people calling for Hope Solo to be suspended not just from the MLS but also the US team.

      6. JB says:

Thank you DJ. That’s the truth. We are the only group that will do this to each other. Like my mother told me when I was a kid. White people will stick together even if they’re as wrong as a dog with glasses

    2. Khaleem Allah says:

Right on the Money! No pun intended.

  2. Harry McRae says:

I have to admit, until I really starting listening to Teriq on this issue and many others facing our people, I was one of those African Americans who were “Mayweather bashing,” because I thought he was arrogant. I was enlightened further about what this was really all about. I did some independent research and found that Mayweather is a threat to the usual business model of white supremacy. When I realized this, he became a symbol of independence that we should all aspire to. It’s #TMT all day now for me!

Actually, the other HBO commentator, Max Kellerman, was suspended for admitting to smacking his now wife, Erin, in college when she was his then girlfriend. Michelle Beadle, against company policy, went after a fellow ESPN employee and wasn’t disciplined. She’s made a big deal of questioning Floyd Mayweather about his domestic violence history. But yet, she gladly works for HBO Boxing with two white men that have domestic violence issues. Here are some excerpts:

The conversation in question took place Monday afternoon, three days after Stephen A. Smith was suspended for saying women should be careful not to “provoke” any incident of abuse. On ESPN-LA, Kellerman told a story going back years when he and his then-girlfriend Erin, who now is his wife, attended a college party.

Kellerman said they both had to much too drink. He said when he tried getting things under control his then-girlfriend slapped him. Kellerman said he slapped her back. He was quick to tell listeners that the woman is now is his wife and they have been happily married for 20 years.

Industry sources said while the content of his story was disturbing, the suspension was all about Kellerman, who once worked for ESPN New York Radio, not adhering to ESPN brass’ warning concerning the Rice topic being a highly sensitive one. “My understanding is that it was part of a larger conversation ESPN had with all its on-air people,” a radio industry source said. “Kellerman obviously didn’t pay attention.”

Kellerman’s remarks were briefly posted on an ESPN-LA podcast but quickly pulled down and never widely circulated.

Ironically, Michelle Beadle is one of the “SportsNation” hosts. After Smith made his remarks, she called him out on Twitter. Beadle is currently on vacation and has not yet offered comments on the Kellerman situation. Kellerman’s other co-host is former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, who also joins him on the radio side.

Child please! The disdain for Floyd Mayweather comes from the fact that he’s an insensitive, egomaniacal jerk! Jim Brown was an unapologetic black man, but he was concerned about what was best for more than just him. Muhammad Ali was an unapologetic black man, but again he was concerned about what was best for more than just him! I’m a black dude and it’s annoying me that you’re playing the race card

  5. eric says:

We’re all we’ve got. We’re all we need!!!!

  6. Lady Source says:

The last several matches, no one gave a damn about Floyd’s background, and no one booed him. This whole thing was a smear campaign perpetrated by the media for a bigger story. They incited this outcome by constantly talking about it on their platforms, knowing the type of reaction that would occur.

It’s alright to not condone domestic abuse (I certainly don’t in any way) but black people should wake up and know when you are being manipulated

Why would Manny’s dad eating his dog cause any type of outrage against him? He states in his autobiography that his dad came home drunk and killed his puppy out of anger when they had an argument. Manny was traumatized by this and ran away after it happened; he was the victim…
