Sometimes, clarity is needed to discern whether something is good, or not as good as we may perceive it to be.
There has been a recent trend in Black Society which sees a segment of Melanoid men opt to wear suits almost everywhere they go. The reason why, you ask? Allegedly, the Brothers are doing so in response to the recent occurrences of Melanoid people being murdered by white supremacist race soldiers. In an article from Mashable, several Melanoid gentlemen were featured, explaining their need to be dressed well at all times:
“If they dress up, they showed how grateful and sacred they saw freedom as, therefore showing white people that they could be recognized as humans”, says Calvin Warren, an assistant professor of American Studies at George Washington University. Mr. Warren, who also happens to be a Melanoid man, recently spoke to a class he taught, titled “Representing Black Men”. Several of the Melanoid students asked Mr. Warren what could be done to prevent racial profiling by race soldiers, and Warren’s reply was an interesting one:
“Clothing choices are life or death choices.”
Although the aforementioned statement may appear to be simple to many, Mr. Warren articulated a certain perception that has been shared in Black Society that is quite complex. For years, it has been stated that Melanoid people–particularly the men of Black Society–need to veer away from the fashion choices that many believe Melanoid men make. Those choices include the more laid-back clothing combos of jeans, t-shirts, hoodies (in cooler temperatures), with sneakers.
What should be emphasized, is the unfortunate fact that many of the Melanoid men (and in many cases Melanoid women as well) who were lynched, beaten, and harassed by law enforcement were well-dressed individuals whose “presentable” image was totally disregarded by their assailants. Check out the following images which show that the Melanoid victims were actually very presentable in their appearance.
Lawrence Otis Graham, a member of Black Society who is a well-known attorney and bestselling author, seemed to echo the sentiments expressed in the Mashable article. Last year, Mr. Graham was featured in an ABC News report. In the interview from the report, Graham explained why his sons aren’t allowed to wear dark clothing, hoodies, or shirts with labels of any sort. You can see the interview in the video below.
Another prime example of how this issue is highly questionable would be none other than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was arrested, harassed by law enforcement, and eventually assassinated because of his position as a prominent leader in Black Society. In a nutshell, he was deemed a serious threat by those in the dominant society. That being stated, we’d be hard pressed to find pictures of people like Patrice Lumumba, Dr. King, Malcolm X, and many other Melanoid martyrs wearing “threatening” looking clothing, because we’ve mostly seen them in suits and ties. The oppressive and system of white supremacy disregards what style of clothing Melanoid people choose to wear, because its murderous agenda is anti-Black to its core…whether we decide to wear Timberlands OR Tom Ford.

Wow, this is a bit disturbing watching this seemingly successful man explain his reasoning for dressing his children the way that he does but at the end of the day, those are his children and unfortunately, he feels the only way to “protect them” from RWS (Racism White Supremacy) is to keep them well dressed (or preppified).
The Black Authority said we have no warrior class and after reading this article and listening to Mr. Graham I am inclined to believe him. TBA also mentioned how most of our elders are cowards and deserve no respect from the younger generation. Again, I am inclined to believe him.
At this point, with people like Mr. Graham teaching his children that clothes and not RWS is the problem in America, plus the silly @$$ individuals who only want to turn up in the clubs all week long, oh and lets not forget the retards who stand on line for the newest sneakers and electronics …man I really hate to say this but at this rate we need to just go ahead and wave the white flag and accept the inevitable…smh
These past several years (starting in 2008 with black people living under the illusion of change with Obama) have been sad ones for me as I reflect on the zombie like state of 99.9999% of black people. To quickly weigh in on this as a young African American man. First, Mr. Graham’s and these other Melaniod gentlemen’s precautions are “not an absolute guarantee” that they or their son’s will not experience the injustice of being profiled. I am professional who wears business attire most days, and I still have to watch over my shoulder. As for the comments on the apparel that we associate as “thug attire”, this becomes a double-edge sword. While I do validate the wisdom of “not making yourself a target”. However, because I am not so far removed from current generations. To simply state that something like a hoodie, or any other urban apparel trend associates a young man with criminality is to subscribe to stereotypical thinking. Young African Americans have influenced popular culture so, that they are no longer the only ones expressing themselves through this style of dress. It is very possible to single out any other ethnicity, find a subculture of young people within the ethnic group that frequently engages in criminal activity, and then catalog common attire of that particular segment. After which, attribute the attire of that group to a criminal element. In summary it is sad that we no longer scrutinize injustice as a human issue but as an attire issue.

As a melanated man who works in the clothing industry, I understand both sides of the conversation. However I believe certain aspects have been taken out context. First it must be noted that when we look at the history of people post slavery, everyone wore suits, little children ran around in knickerbockers, waistcoats, and dress shirts, topped of with apple jack hats. It was the dress of the day, before department stores, trends, and varied stylistic sensibilities. So when white people were hanging our folks it was simply because they were black. With the prominence of the hip hop culture we have seen a way for the systems of white supremacy to codify the fear and demonization of black males through propaganda imaging, the things they don’t talk about, fully aware that a picture speaks much louder than words. So if you see a black dude in a hoodie and jeans enough times associated with a robbery you begin to associate black men in hoodies with robberies, omitting the fact that white men who rob wear them too because it hides their physical features.
It’s important to remember that clothing, especially for men, has first and foremost always been about function mainly serving two functions. 1st protection car coats, riding jackets, suits and even denim jeans had a function but they also provided the 2nd function and that was communication in the early 1900’s everyone wore suits but the average American only had 1 they had to wear for business, leisure and activities, the poor folks, especially white folks in the back woods often couldn’t even afford those and would walk around in trousers, braces and their only dress shirt. But black folks understood the psychology of dressing well, which is why we put on our Sunday best and why we invested in our clothing the way did. Not only did we look dope, we liked how we saw ourselves. We were distinguished we held our heads up higher, the fit of our frocks made us stand up straighter and walk taller. And as we moved through the civil rights era it became a space of solidarity, and with the inception of the black panther party in the 70’s our clothing became a statement.
But in the last 30 years we (America) have become lax in the way we see ourselves, opting for “comfort” over pride. No one can tell me they feel the same wearing their best, whether it’s a suit or their best pressed pair of denim a button down and a cardigan, as they do when they through on a tee shirt and some rag tag pair of jeans. It’s a way we see ourselves. It’s an armor of sorts not protecting us from the police, although it would look even more crazy for them assaulting and murdering black men in suits or dressed to the nines, it protects our own minds and perceptions of the media, of others, and sometimes even of ourselves. And the functioning of how those pictures are speaking to us when we look in the mirror transforms the way others experience us, we demand that respect and the powers that be have no choice but to adhere to our power. Does this mean you can’t wear “urban” apparel, hell no, but we must understand its communication and the context with which we are promoting it. So that even if we’re in a tee shirt, jeans, sneakers and a fitted, it looks like our best and that we are putting our best foot forward.
