The Players’ Code

It’s been understood that in order for any group of people to progress as a unit, then it is imperative that they establish a code of conduct among their group. There seems to be at least one group of people who have understood and practiced this code of conduct: the citizens of the Philippines, who staunchly defend whom many consider to be a national treasure of that nation, none other than professional boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao, who is heavily active with basketball in his home country when he’s not participating in his “day job” of boxing, serves as the player/coach of the Kia Carnival, a professional franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association. Daniel Orton, a former Black NBA player who also served as a member of Kia Carnival, was cut by his team for making remarks about Pacquiao’s basketball playing ability.

“Pacquiao playing is a joke. Professional boxer? Yeah. Congressman? All right. But Professional basketball player? Seriously? It’s a joke.”

After making the aforementioned comments about Pacquiao, Orton was released from his team, the Hotshots of the Philippine Basketball Association, after playing in just three games and slapped with a fine that cost him nearly $6,000. A top official for Orton’s former team implied that Orton’s comments about Pacquiao were akin to one going to the United States and “insulting the name of Martin Luther King”.

What makes this story interesting is that it is yet another reminder of how other racial groups outside of the Black community are able to disregard petty differences and get on code whenever someone outside of their group violates them in any way. Another issue to take into consideration is that representatives of the Philippine Basketball Association got on code by protecting a fellow countryman whom they feel is exempt from even receiving light hearted jokes given by members outside of their group.

Could many of our great Black ancestors who took the fall for our people have possibly been saved had we been on code by being more vigilant in protecting them from people who do not see our group’s best interest(s) at heart? Can we get on code in present day to protect the people who are on the frontlines fighting for Black Empowerment today? Can we get on code to counter white supremacy as a group? This is why there may be a need for code enforcement in our community as opposed to searching for the next Black leader to “take us to the Promised Land”. Members of the dominant society in the United States understand this. The people of the Philippines understand this concept as it pertains to Manny Pacquiao among many other issues in their community. Do we in Melanoid Nation have a code of conduct?
