A white police officer in North Charleston, S.C., was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him executing unarmed Black man in the back while he ran away.
The officer, Michael T. Slager, 33, used the common lie told by race soldiers posing as police officers by claiming he feared for his life because the man took his stun gun in a scuffle after a traffic stop on Saturday. A video, however, shows the officer firing eight times as the man fled. The North Charleston mayor announced the state charges at a news conference Tuesday evening.
The victim Walter L. Scott, 50, was allegedly pulled over by the officer for a broken taillight. Media outlets are already taking the focus off the police officer charged with murder,and they are bringing up irrelevant issues such as Walter Scott’s child support cases.
